It is our pleasure to announce the inaugural European Khat Research Program Conference (EKRPC) that will be held on the Campus Westend of the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, 26-28 September, 2013. The conference will include keynote presentations and research papers presented within thematically focused symposia. The following themes will be covered:

·       Recent khat research: Patterns and trends

·       Pharmacological and cognitive neuroscience of khat use

·       Mental health and substance abuse problems related to khat

·       Strategies and policies focusing on prevention and intervention efforts

 

The conference is organized by the Khat Research Program in collaboration with Goethe-University Frankfurt in Frankfurt am Main. Information about abstract submission, registration, meeting location, and housing and travel arrangement are below.

The Khat Research Program (KRP) is a multidisciplinary research and training program focusing on khat and related mental and substance use issues. The program is partially funded by the National Institutes of Health and the University of Minnesota, U.S.A. The program is conducted in collaboration with multiple universities in the United States, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

MEETING LOCATION

The meeting will be held on the Campus Westend of the Goethe-University Frankfurt in Frankfurt am Main, Germany in the Hörsaal Zentrum (HZ-Building). Frankfurt is a primary European hub, easily accessible from all over the world. The University campus is accessible to the Frankfurt International Airport and the Central Train Station.

Submissions must be received electronically and no later than 11:59 P.M. (GMT) , August 1, 2013, to be considered for inclusion in the program.

Keynote presentations and research papers presented within thematically focused symposia

Targeted audience
Researchers, clinicians, and health policy makers in multiple medical and mental health fields including physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and addiction counselors are invited to attend.

 

Topics

Abstracts should be related to khat research and would later be clustered into one of the following themes:

·       Recent khat research: Patterns and trends

·       Pharmacological and cognitive neuroscience of khat use

·       Mental health and substance abuse problems related to khat

·       Strategies and policies focusing on prevention and intervention efforts

Instructions for submission

  • All abstracts must be submitted and presented in clear English.
  • Abstracts should be submitted as an attachment word documents sent to ekrp2013@gmail.com.
  • Abstracts will be reviewed by members from the scientific committee to assess quality, relevance, and appropriateness for the conference.
  • Deadline for abstracts submission August 1st, 2013
  • Notifications regarding abstract acceptance/rejection will be sent to abstract submitters by August 15, 2013.
  • Following acceptance, scheduling information will be sent to the abstract submitter.

HOUSING AND TRAVEL ARRANGEMENT

Attendees are encouraged to make their travel arrangement and room reservation as soon as possible. Please make your own travel arrangement and hotel reservation by September 1, 2013.

 

Note, the special rate is provided for the time of the conference. If you are interested in arriving earlier or leaving later, please inquire with the hotels about other special rates they may have.

The rates should be 67.- Euro single rooms, 75.- Euro for twin/double rooms occupied by one person, and 83.- Euro for twin/double rooms occupied by two persons, breakfast and taxes included. The hotel is located close to a subway, tram and bus station from where you get easily to Central Train Station and by bus to the University Campus Westend.

The hotel is located within walking distance to the conference venue (10-15 min) und close to a subway station that brings you within 10-15 minutes to the main hubs of Frankfurt. It is located at a busy street. You may ask for a room away from the street.

A contingent of 7 single and 3 twin/double rooms is reserved for participants of the conference for special rates of 89/65 (single) and 119/95 Euros, taxes, and breakfast included. The higher rates are for the night Thu/Fri, the lower rates for the night Fri/Sat.

The Hotel is located next to the Central Train Station with excellent connections to everywhere. The Central Station neighbourhood ("Bahnhofsviertel") is very lively.

The rates should be 110.- Euro for single, standard and comfort rooms, breakfast and taxes included. For the last night Fri/Sat the rate should be 90.- Euro. Only a few rooms are left.

The hotel is located in a quiet area, half way between the University Campus and the down town area. It takes one block to the next subway or bus station. The subway (Bockenheimer Warte) is two stops apart from the Central Train Station. There are comfortable bus connections to the University Campus Westend. But it is also possible to walk to the Campus or to the down town area (15-20 minutes).

The hotel is located in a quiet area and within walking distance to the conference venue (5-10 min). Refer to the Khat Research Conference when making a reservation.
